How Many Months Can You Afford to Job Search?

Whether you're job hunting by choice or because of a layoff, the question that actually matters isn't “how's the market” — it's “how many months can I search before I need income coming in.” That's a number, not a feeling, and it's worth knowing before you're mid-search.

Accessible savings ÷ monthly essential expenses = your job search runway in months. The same math as an emergency fund, pointed at a specific goal.

Why this number changes how you search

A short runway pushes toward taking the first reasonable offer, even if it's not the best fit. A longer runway means more room to be selective, negotiate, or wait for a role that's actually a step forward instead of a lateral move made out of urgency. Neither is wrong — but you should know which situation you're actually in before decisions get made by the calendar instead of by choice.

What to count as “accessible savings”

Checking and savings account balances, and anything you could liquidate within a few weeks without a penalty. Leave out retirement accounts you'd pay a penalty to access, and leave out illiquid assets like home equity — this number is about what you could actually spend next month if you needed to.

What to count as “monthly essential expenses”

Housing, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments, groceries, and transportation — the bills that don't pause during a job search. Leave out discretionary spending; if the search runs long, that's usually the first thing to cut anyway, which extends the real number beyond the calculator's estimate.

Extending the runway from both directions

Severance, unemployment benefits, or freelance income during the search all extend the timeline — plug them in as monthly income and the math adjusts automatically. On the other side, a resume that isn't getting past applicant tracking software is quietly shortening your runway by extending your search for no good reason.
