Whether you're job hunting by choice or because of a layoff, the question that actually matters isn't “how's the market” — it's “how many months can I search before I need income coming in.” That's a number, not a feeling, and it's worth knowing before you're mid-search.

Why this number changes how you search

A short runway pushes toward taking the first reasonable offer, even if it's not the best fit. A longer runway means more room to be selective, negotiate, or wait for a role that's actually a step forward instead of a lateral move made out of urgency. What to count as “accessible savings”

Checking and savings account balances, and anything you could liquidate within a few weeks without a penalty.
